The 24th of September each year marks South Africans’ celebration of Heritage Day.
Defining Heritage Day and Its Importance
It is an important day and is celebrated each year. On Heritage Day, South Africans celebrate our culture and unique diversity. We use the day to celebrate our beliefs, customs, and traditions. However, no one can take away who we are.
The late and former president, Nelson Mandela, started Heritage Day in 1996. We are a prosperous nation because of our incredibly varied cultural heritage. Our culture has a profound power to build our country.
The Importance of Heritage Day
It is essential because it represents a moment when we can step outside our cultural bubble. This helps encourages us to learn, explore, grow, and experience the vibrant and different types of cultures that South Africa offers.
Learning about our own culture improves our understanding, appreciation, recognition and respect for each other’s cultures.
How We Celebrate
We all celebrate Heritage Day in different ways. For example, some of us celebrate the day by dressing up in our cultural attire. Some celebrate by cooking cultural and traditional foods to celebrate the day. Sharing our traditional cuisines plays an essential role in the celebration of our heritage.
Many celebrate Heritage Day at the workplace by sharing the traditional foods eaten by different cultures, dressing up in traditional clothes and sharing their uniqueness with coworkers.
Another way to celebrate heritage day is to visit museums and city halls, view the art and sculptures displayed or shared, and expose ourselves to our written history. By enjoying these elements of culture together, we learn to appreciate the culture of friends, communities and our coworkers.
Moral Lessons from Heritage Day
Each person is an individual. Everyone has their unique culture and identity, which is essential to them. The purpose of heritage day is to expose ourselves to these differences—and encourage an environment in which people’s cultural heritage is respected and honoured.
The Heritage Day Message
The message of Heritage Day is that we must educate our younger generations and teach them about our legacy, and respect our diversity and honour heritage.
